Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish La Liga football league, emphasized today the importance of applying equal financial regulations to all clubs, in the context of reports circulating about the imminent sanctioning of Manchester City for breaching financial fair play rules. Tebas pointed out that this issue highlights the urgent need to ensure the integrity of football and its long-term sustainability, stressing that transparent application of regulations to everyone is the only way to maintain fair competition.
Tebas’s statements come after press reports indicated that Manchester City might face severe penalties following convictions on most of the 115 charges against them, revealed by the English Premier League in February 2023. Some of these violations date back to the 2009/2010 season, a period in which the club won many prominent titles, including the Champions League in 2023.
Tebas recalled the 2020 decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which overturned a previous UEFA ruling that had banned Manchester City from participating in continental competitions for two years due to financial fair play violations. The La Liga president described that decision as highly mistaken, believing it negatively affected the credibility of the economic monitoring system in European football.
Javier Tebas concluded his remarks, published via his official account on the “X” platform, by affirming that the path is still long until the final sanctions against Manchester City are announced, and that the procedures are ongoing. He emphasized once again that this issue reaffirms the importance of financial oversight, transparency, and the application of unified regulations to all clubs to protect the game and ensure its sustainability, asserting that they will continue to defend these principles as they did in 2017.
