In a notable political and sporting gesture, Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, openly expressed his support for Lamin Yamal, the young Barcelona player, following his raising of the Palestinian flag during his team’s La Liga title celebrations.
This incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and reaffirms the firm stance of the Spanish government regarding the Palestinian cause, as Spain had previously recognized the State of Palestine. This gesture by Yamal and Sánchez’s defense of it has attracted widespread attention both locally and internationally.
In a statement, Sánchez confirmed that Spain has repeatedly condemned what he called the “genocide” committed by Israeli authorities in the Gaza Strip, in addition to condemning the illegal occupation through settlements in the West Bank.
Sánchez stressed that this dangerous war only adds to the instability and insecurity in the Middle East, even for Israeli society itself. Therefore, he pointed out that it is time to respect international law and to end the ongoing war, opening real political horizons that ensure peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine.
The Spanish Prime Minister pointed out that achieving peace is not only about the arrival of humanitarian aid but also requires ending impunity and full recognition of the State of Palestine.
He added that Spain, which recognizes the existence of the State of Israel, affirms Palestine’s full right to exist as a sovereign state. The defense of Lamin Yamal by the Spanish Prime Minister stands as a clear political message reflecting Spain’s orientation towards a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, calling for the implementation of the principles of international law and justice.
