The English Football Association today decided to fine Fulham coach Álvaro Arbeloa £25,000, in addition to issuing him a formal warning, following comments he made after his team’s match against Manchester United in the English Premier League. These comments included a direct questioning of the referee’s integrity, which the independent committee considered inappropriate conduct. Arbeloa faces this penalty after admitting to the charge related to his behavior following the 1-1 draw between Fulham and Manchester United in the match held at Craven Cottage on September 20.
The Spanish coach’s remarks sparked widespread controversy at the time, as he implied, referencing Manchester United, that “all the mistakes were in their favor.” Arbeloa clearly added that “all the decisions were in their favor,” expressing his belief that “after the Manchester City match, they would not allow Manchester United to lose here.” These comments followed Manchester United’s loss to Manchester City the previous weekend, by a goal that sparked much refereeing debate.
The independent committee that examined the case clarified in its written decision published Wednesday that Álvaro Arbeloa’s statements “not only suggested bias from the match officials repeatedly throughout the game but also implied possible intent on their part and/or other parties to compensate for an error that occurred in another match.” This interpretation by the committee highlights the seriousness of the coach’s statements and their impact on the reputation of refereeing and the competition overall.
It is worth noting that this season is Arbeloa’s first as a head coach for Fulham, having taken charge of the London club after leaving Real Madrid. This decision serves as a clear message from the English FA about the necessity to uphold sportsmanship and respect refereeing decisions, even under the significant pressure coaches face in the Premier League.
