Virgil van Dijk, captain of the Dutch national team and Liverpool’s defensive rock, expressed his full confidence in the ability of the “Oranje” to achieve a historic feat and win the 2026 World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.
Van Dijk emphasized that the current generation possesses all the elements of success, including maturity, experience, and team spirit, to end the long wait. This statement confirms the great ambition driving the Dutch players towards global championship podiums, especially since the 2026 World Cup could be the ideal stage to write a new chapter in history.
Van Dijk revealed in media reports: “When I see this group and the capabilities we have, I strongly believe we are capable of delivering an exceptional performance and achieving a very important accomplishment.” The veteran defender touched on his experience in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where the eliminations at the quarterfinals by Argentina, who later won the title, was painful. He explained that losing to the world champions somewhat softened the bitterness of the elimination.
In a related context, the Dutch captain pointed to his failure in penalty shootouts against Argentina at that time, despite intensive training, affirming that training does not always guarantee success in football.
He also reviewed the Netherlands’ history in the World Cup, particularly the losses in three finals in 1974, 1978, and 2010, recalling Arjen Robben’s missed chance against Iker Casillas in the 2010 final.
He added: “For a small country like the Netherlands, we have performed very well so far, but we aspire to win the title, and we have the elements capable of doing so,” highlighting that their ultimate goal is to win the 2026 World Cup.
Van Dijk confirmed that winning tournaments is not only about having the best individual players but about cohesion and playing as one team. He explained that “it’s not just about having great players, but who has the better team. Many of our players participated in Euro 2024, which was their first major tournament, and now they are in their prime and play for big clubs in the Champions League,” emphasizing the importance of harmony and gained experience.
Van Dijk concluded his statements by expressing his pride in leading his national team, noting that guiding the team to glory would be wonderful, but he understands that there is a lot of work ahead of them.
He expressed pride in his journey with the Dutch national team and the contribution he made with this generation, hoping that people will remember him as a distinguished captain with excellent defensive qualities.
