Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish League Association, renewed his severe criticisms today of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and its president Gianni Infantino, stating that plans to expand the 2030 World Cup to include 64 teams are completely illogical.
Tebas expressed his belief that this expansion threatens to destroy football, calling on Infantino to step down immediately.
In statements reported by the press, Tebas explained that “FIFA organizes things for its own interests, away from the real interests of football.”
He referred to a previous incident, saying: “They were lucky in the Belgium vs. United States match, otherwise it would have been a major scandal that could have toppled Infantino from FIFA presidency.”
These statements come amid ongoing controversy over the congested match schedule and its negative impact on players and competitions.
The La Liga Association president affirmed that the demands to increase the number of teams participating in the World Cup to 64 reflect a disregard for the sport’s best interests, noting that “holding the 2030 World Cup with such a huge number of teams is unacceptable.”
Tebas has previously repeatedly warned of the issue of overlapping tournament schedules and excessive matches, which place enormous pressure on players and clubs.
Tebas concluded his remarks by describing the current situation as “FIFA is destroying football, and Infantino must leave,” considering that the time has come to change leadership.
Despite these harsh criticisms, Tebas pointed out that Infantino enjoys strong support from the current regime, and there is no strong opposing candidate willing to enter a competition that seems unequal.
