Dutch coach Ronald Koeman defended his decision to rely on five defenders in the match against the Moroccan national team during the World Cup, affirming that he does not feel any regret about this choice and would repeat it if given the chance again.
Koeman made statements to the Dutch channel “NOS” after the match that ended with the elimination of his country, noting that the defensive strategy was necessary. He added that the criticisms do not bother him, which is a strange contrast to the previous popular demands calling for the implementation of this plan.
The coach explained the reasons behind this tactical shift, saying that giving wide spaces to opponents during the group stage was dangerous, especially against a team like Morocco that has highly skilled players. He confirmed that repeating this would have meant falling into trouble, so, after consultations with the players, they decided to play with five defenders.
Regarding his response to the criticisms, Koeman stated that he understands being the main target, emphasizing that his duty as a coach is to make the right decisions, even if they are controversial. He admitted to some unsuccessful aspects, such as defensive retreat at times, but stressed that facing a strong team like Morocco, with outstanding players, makes it impossible not to give them any chance.
It is noted that the match between the Netherlands and Morocco in the World Cup round of 16 ended in a 1-1 draw, before the Moroccan team secured their qualification by penalty shootouts with a score of 3-2, setting a clash for the Atlas Lions against Canada in the next round.
