The French channel M6 officially announced that it will not broadcast the highly anticipated Argentina vs. Algeria match in the 2026 World Cup finals, which was scheduled to take place on the night of June 16-17.
This decision came after the match was scheduled for 3 AM French time, which led to its exclusion from the list of matches broadcast on open air television.
Through this change, the channel aims to reach a wider audience at more convenient viewing times, thus ensuring high viewership ratings that match the importance of a global event like the World Cup.
Guillaume Charles, the head of programming at the French network, explained that the primary criterion for selecting matches for live broadcast is closely linked to the match’s ability to attract a large audience during usual viewing times.
Charles confirmed that the 3 AM timing would not achieve the hoped-for mass viewership, stating: “Unfortunately, at 3 AM, there will not be a large number of viewers as with other matches we have chosen,” emphasizing that the channel aims to achieve the highest levels of engagement with its carefully selected sports programs.
It is worth mentioning that the channel had set its strategy to broadcast 47 matches, starting their whistle blows between 6 PM and 11 PM, including comprehensive coverage of the French national team’s first round games in the tournament.
The decision not to broadcast the Argentina vs. Algeria match remains a hot topic in sports circles, especially among fans of both teams.
