The 2026 World Cup, currently held in North America, has witnessed a remarkable audience turnout, with attendance exceeding one million fans in just the first 16 matches.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced this achievement, emphasizing the overwhelming popularity of the game and the continued strong spectator interest in the world’s premier football event.
This success has coincided with new records in daily match attendance, reflecting the great passion for football.
Despite the positive figures, the tournament was not without some challenges and concerns that emerged before and at its start. According to press reports, there were many concerns about ticket prices, which seem somewhat justified, as empty seats were noticed in some matches, such as the South Korea vs. Czech Republic match in Guadalajara, as well as the Qatar vs. Switzerland match in the San Francisco Bay area.
However, FIFA emphasized that the overall stadium occupancy rate reached 99.34%, confirming an attendance total of 1,028,429 fans by Monday.
In a related context, representatives of fan organizations warned about the “danger” of the absence of clear separation between rival team supporters in the stadiums. The executive director of “Football Supporters Europe,” Ronan Evan, pointed out that the lack of such separation is not normal for a tournament the size of the World Cup.
Concerns were also raised about FIFA’s inability to accurately track ticket ownership due to the widespread resale of tickets, increasing the likelihood of mixing rival fans in the stands in an unplanned manner.
On the other hand, FIFA President Gianni Infantino celebrated this large fan turnout, praising the “passionate supporters who continue to fill the stadiums,” describing them as those who made this edition “as inclusive as possible.”
Later, FIFA announced that the four matches held on Tuesday set a new record for the highest attendance in a single day in the tournament’s history, with spectators numbering 281,223, surpassing the previous record set in the 1994 World Cup.
The current average attendance, which reached 65,483 fans, indicates that the tournament is on track to exceed the total attendance record of 3.5 million set in the 1994 edition.
