National coach Mohamed Wahbi expressed mixed feelings following the elimination of the Atlas Lions from the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, after a 2-0 defeat against the French national team on Thursday.
Despite the bitterness of the loss, Wahbi affirmed his deep pride in the outstanding performance his players showed in the tournament, emphasizing that this result will not erase the achievements and will not deter him from continuing hard work in preparation for upcoming challenges. Morocco’s exit from the World Cup quarterfinals is a moment for performance evaluation and future planning.
Wahbi revealed in his post-match comments that it was the French team that forced them into tactical retreat, not a predetermined decision by the coaching staff.
He explained: “We did not decide to retreat, but the French excellence in ball possession and the ability to penetrate from the flanks, in addition to playing short passes and intelligent movements, forced us to cluster in our defensive zones.”
The coach admitted the difficulty of advancing the ball during offensive transitions in the first half, but pointed to a noticeable improvement in performance in the second half despite the same lineup, stressing the need to exert more effort and move without the ball to open spaces.
Wahbi acknowledged the superiority of the French team, noting that the first goal came at a moment when his players lacked concentration, according to press reports. He emphasized the strength of the French team, their ability to exploit any mistake, the speed of ball transition, and the quality of their players.
The coach also rejected attributing the reasons for the elimination to injuries sustained by some players, affirming the need to trust all team members and not seek excuses, that Morocco’s exit from the World Cup quarterfinals should be a motivation to work harder.
Wahbi concluded his statements by reaffirming continued belief in the team’s abilities and the necessity to expand and develop the player base to face any future challenges, whether injuries or physical fitness decline.
He directed a message of thanks to the Moroccan fans, saying: “We realize that we represent an entire nation and millions of Moroccans around the world, and the fighting spirit and mentality we show is what makes everyone identify with this team. We will not stop at joy only, but will strive diligently to win the titles you deserve.”
