Like all members of the global cycling family, the Royal Moroccan Cycling Federation commemorates on Wednesday, June 3rd, the “World Bicycle Day” which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly during its meeting in April 2018, according to resolution (A/RES/72/272), recognizing the numerous benefits of the bicycle as a “simple, sustainable, reliable, and environmentally friendly means of transport.”

The “little princess” (bicycle) also plays a fundamental role in contributing to building a more sustainable future, especially in combating global warming, air pollution, and traffic congestion.

In this context, the President of the Royal Moroccan Cycling Federation, Mr. Mohamed Ben Mahy, stated that the federation considers this celebration part of a sustainable national dynamic by making the bicycle a bridge between humans and nature, between sports and life, and between dreams and simplicity. It also represents a recurring national occasion highlighting the importance of the “little princess” in daily life as a tool for clean mobility and a means for environmental and sports education.

Mr. Ben Mahy explained that cycling fundamentally has multidimensional strengths, particularly in environmental preservation, reducing transportation costs, creating job opportunities, and numerous other benefits in maintaining physical and mental health. However, he noted that the federation’s goals to prevent accident risks have not been fully achieved due to the absence of dedicated bicycle lanes.

He expressed hope that elected officials, local communities, and concerned institutions would engage in this dynamic and pay more attention to cycling and encourage its use, considering it a safe and clean mode of transportation.

In a related context, the Royal Moroccan Cycling Federation called on all regional leagues and sports associations under its umbrella to contribute to commemorating World Bicycle Day by organizing sports, educational, and awareness activities that highlight the importance of this means of transport in promoting health, protecting the environment, and effectively contributing to sustainable development.

The celebration program also includes group rides in both urban and rural areas, creating a direct link between citizens and their environment, restoring the public space’s value as a place for shared living.

Furthermore, awareness workshops have been scheduled for children and youth to promote a culture of road safety and proper environmental behavior, as fostering a cycling culture is a shared social responsibility that should be encouraged and supported.
