The Moroccan international, Zakaria Labyad, confirmed that he chose to embark on a new experience in Brazil with Corinthians, driven by his desire to contribute to the team’s development and continue winning titles. He noted that his strong relationship with Dutch star Memphis Depay had a direct impact on his decision.
During his official presentation, Labyad stated: “Throughout my career, I’ve been expected to win matches and secure titles, and I’ve achieved eight or nine. I spoke with Memphis about the pressure at Corinthians. I also played with Carillo at Sporting, and we discussed the atmosphere here,” affirming that he is accustomed to playing under pressure.
He added: “This is a big club, and last season it won three titles even though no one expected it. I am a disciplined player and I hate losing, which is also the mentality of Brazilian players, so I believe my adaptation will be good.”
Labyad recalled his memories with several Brazilian players he played alongside in Europe, including goalkeeper Cassio Ramos at PSV Eindhoven, as well as David Neres and Antony, asserting that his relationship with Brazilian players has always been special.
He explained: “I feel a strong connection to Brazil. I visited it 16 years ago and played two friendly matches in Salvador and Fortaleza with PSV. It’s a footballing nation, and I am happy to be here.”
Labyad believes that playing for a club the size of Corinthians could open new international horizons for him, stating: “Playing for one of the biggest clubs in South America is a great opportunity for me, and it could increase my chances of participating in the World Cup if I perform well.”
For the past two weeks, the player has been training at the “CT Joaquim Grava” center to regain his physical fitness, especially since he hasn’t played an official match since last November. He confirmed that he will be ready for his first appearance next week.
Regarding fasting, Labyad emphasized: “I am fasting, and this has been the case throughout my sports career. I am at my best during Ramadan, and fasting does not affect my performance.”
He concluded by clarifying his technical attributes: “I am a technical player, I play as an attacking midfielder and I can play in five or six positions. I prefer to be positioned in the center, and I will try to help the team with goals, assists, and contribute to achieving victories.”
