Kooralife – Rabat
Morocco’s national team has secured its place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Tanzania one goal to nil. The decisive match, officiated by Malian referee Boubou Touaroui, took place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat as part of the Round of 16 fixtures.
The solitary goal of the game was scored by Brahim Diaz, ensuring the “Atlas Lions'” progression. The encounter was marked by intense competition, with Tanzania employing a tactical approach that defied expectations.
Continuity in the Starting Lineup
National coach Walid Regragui maintained the same starting lineup that faced Zambia in the previous match, with the exception of an injured Azzedine Ounahi, who was replaced by Bilal El Khannouss. The starting eleven included: Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi, Nayef Aguerd, Adam Masina, Noussair Mazraoui, Amir Richardson, Bilal El Khannouss, Ismael Saibari, Brahim Diaz, Abde Ezzalzouli, and Ayoub El Kaabi.
Tanzania Surprises Morocco with Offensive Drive
Contrary to predictions, Tanzania commenced the match with an aggressive attacking style and high pressing. This strategy leveraged coach Gamondi’s familiarity with Moroccan football. Tanzania came close to an early lead in the fourth minute with an attack that unsettled the Moroccan defense and almost caught goalkeeper Bounou off guard.
Dominance Without Efficacy
Despite the opponent’s bold start, the Moroccan team gradually asserted its presence in the game, focusing on calm build-up play and controlling the tempo. Saibari managed to find the net in the fifteenth minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Morocco launched numerous attempts from both flanks, through the movements of Ezzalzouli, Saibari, and Mazraoui on the left, and Hakimi, Diaz, and El Khannouss on the right. However, Tanzania’s resilient defense prevented them from scoring, despite efforts from Brahim Diaz in the thirty-fourth and thirty-sixth minutes.
The first half concluded in a goalless draw, with Tanzania successfully neutralizing Morocco’s threats.
Individual Brilliance Breaks the Stalemate
In the second half, the “Atlas Lions” continued to press for an opening goal amidst Tanzania’s deep defensive stance. Ezzalzouli nearly scored in the fiftieth minute, but the goalkeeper saved his header. Ayoub El Kaabi then missed another opportunity with a header that went wide in the fifty-third minute.
In the sixty-fourth minute, Brahim Diaz capitalized on an individual effort from the right wing, unleashing a precise shot from a tight angle to give the national team the lead.
Managing the Result Until the Final Whistle
In the seventy-fifth minute, Walid Regragui made three simultaneous substitutions, introducing Youssef En-Nesyri, Salah Eddine, and Elias Ben Seghir, replacing Ayoub El Kaabi, Noussair Mazraoui, and Ismael Saibari, respectively. An additional substitution was made in the eighty-fifth minute, following an injury to Diaz, with Tirghaline coming on.
Tanzania attempted to level the score in the final minutes, but Morocco expertly managed the remainder of the match, preserving their lead until the final whistle. This victory secures their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the South Africa vs. Cameroon match.
