Morocco Aims for Group Dominance in AFCON Qualifiers, Coach Regragui Confident

Rabat – Moroccan national team coach Walid Regragui declared on Sunday in Rabat that the Atlas Lions will approach their match against Zambia with a winning mentality, aiming to secure the top spot in Group A and qualify for the next round of the Africa Cup of Nations (Morocco 2025).

During a press conference held ahead of Monday’s crucial fixture at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, part of the third round of Group A matches, Regragui emphasized that a victory would allow the team to continue its journey in the capital, describing this as “a fundamental goal for continued development.”

The coach highlighted the significant mental gains accumulated by the squad, stressing that periods of adversity are essential for improving performance. He added that the technical staff and players are working tirelessly to bring joy to the fans, viewing criticism as a positive element that contributes to development and raises performance levels.

Regarding Achraf Hakimi’s participation, Regragui confirmed that the right-back would feature in the match against Zambia. He explained that Hakimi’s return provides a crucial boost to the team’s leadership on the pitch, regardless of whether he starts or comes on as a substitute.

The national coach also expressed his satisfaction with Ibrahim Diaz’s performance, noting that the player has overcome pressure and criticism, reaching the mental state expected of him. Regragui described Diaz as a decisive player who adds value both defensively and offensively. He also underlined the importance of Ismael Saibari within the squad, confirming that the technical staff has several options available.

Regragui defended his players against criticism, stating that the high expectations reflect the passion of Moroccans for football, and affirming that the true measure of performance remains what is delivered on the field.

Morocco currently leads Group A with four points, followed by Mali and Zambia with two points each. Comoros occupies the last position with one point. The match between Mali and Comoros will be played simultaneously at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
